``Spatulas Here"

This is an origin story of Portland, Oregon's ``The Spatulas", now starring Miranda (Blimp), Lila, Jon (Hot Gum, Honey Bucket), and Kyle (Scorch, LOX, Meercaz...).

Almost every Friday of 2021 Miranda and I would pick up Holt (and sometimes his wife Masha), then drive to our storage space to make noise. We started formless. Driven by our mounting frustration with those dreary pandemic days and relentless work weeks.

But Miranda's songwriting rapidly developed and Holt's guitar fit right in with her. Dissonantly soloing over Miranda's vulnerable lyrics about lovers, family, and violence. I couldn't have been happier to thump along on bass for these two.

On New Years Eve we drove up to Portland from Eugene. Kyle (who inadvertently is almost responsible for the existence of Mordecai, but that is another story) very generously learned our songs that afternoon in his practice space. Four favorites are featured here, along with two Mordecai ``classics" which were regulars at our Friday sessions.

Lavender Flu and Sad Horse shared the bill. Scott turned over the keys to the new owners (also Sad Horse) at midnight. People pretended to like the spatula stencil shirts we made the night before. Miranda joined Lavender Flu to sing Fleetwood Mac's ``The Chain". Then Holt and I (and many others) danced around to the Flu's pitch perfect rendition of ``14th Floor".
